Bedlam is much more than a film, it had a purpose. Our film was about schizophrenia, a common issue some may have. However, it’s not spoken about enough which we thought was unfair. Mental illnesses are known about, and briefly talked about. But no one really tries to understand it. My group and I are interested in mental health, as we have all done something surrounding that topic. Whether that is experiencing it or joining groups that are based off mental health we all have something that connects us to it. So for our film we wanted to bring attention to how a person may feel with a mental illness. We wanted our audience to feel it for themselves. We did this by having in our opening scene a point of view from the main character and a jump cut to one of those newtons cradles and the main character sleeping. In the point of view the vision was blurry as she walked up to the room she was sleeping in. The second she opens the door her eyes open. This opening was to show that she h...

Short Film Package: Bedlam

I am proud to present our very hard work in our short film below.. Website: Website link:  https://franshescaleiva15.wixsite.com/mysite/home Post card: post card link:  https://www.canva.com/design/DAF-kEA0xww/S3a2XYWj391GDvmRsElUWA/view?utm_content=DAF-kEA0xww&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=editor Film: Link to film:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGp4dfRFnvo         This was definitely a journey making this film happen. I have learned more from my group members, the field of media, mental illnesses, and over all how far our creativity can go. Our film isn't the best out there but it definitely is a good one especially with the limitation we had. I am proud of my group because somehow we pulled it together. Everyone did their parts in the project. We all played to our strengths to...

Production Blog: So close yet so far

Image
Welcome back!!!! So for our film package we need to make the film, of course, a website and a post card. I am in charge of the website as I mentioned before. Which I have been working on for the past week. I'm not going to lie it was a little difficult trying to figure out how to make a website because I am so bad at technology and what not. However, I did have time to learn somewhat how to do it. I ended up using a website to make my website. Ironic but it is working so far. I started by using a template. At first I just did the home page by adding the festivals, some info, and forms to RSVP for the festivals. I also added a menu which I thought would direct people to the sections on the home page, however, only the subscribe button directs people to the bottom of the page. I found this out when I did a preview of the website. I pressed all of the buttons and realized the about and booking sections to you to complete different pages. I know that websites do that so don't think...

Production Blog: History repeats itself

So my other group members realized that their portions are not adding up in the film. So we are filming again. However, we are changing the story a bit because our main character works a lot. And compared to the camera person and me (the best friend) our schedules add up more. So we will add more filler scenes of the best friends to make up for the time we can't have the main character. As of today though my other group member and I went to film at barnes and nobles for the cafe scene. We changed it to just me meeting up with the main character but getting stood up so I texted her, called her, waited for her, etc. This will continue the confusion and waste time in our film. This took us a few tries because I kept getting nervous but we got it done. Also, last year I filmed my music video from AS level at barnes and nobles and now here I am again. Anyways back to what is important. I didn't got to school today so I met up at Barnes & Nobles with them. I got there a little e...

Production Blog: New game plan

Image
OKAY, so maybe I didn't finish editing. After we filmed, I went over everything the night of. I picked the best shots by favoriting everything but not anything else because I wanted to go to sleep. My original plan was to finish editing the following day but I didn't do exactly I wanted to. I added in the clips and made sure they were in the right order. I clipped them for it to make sense as well. But I did want to try and add some titles, however, I did not do so. I kind of don't know how to add titles that are creative or look pretty. Mostly because for my last few projects my other group member added in the titles and focused on editing. This project we are dividing the work to make things easier and fair. I am thinking of asking my partners to do the titles and I'll finish adding the clips and cutting them. I haven't said anything ebcause we have all been super busy. Omnia has been working many late shifts. Harley has also been working a lot recently. And I ha...

Production Blog: Lets try this again

Image
Guess what.. we followed through with the plan. We filmed today after school to reshoot all of the shots at the store. This time we chose a different shopping center because that last one had too many people. Most of them were older so they 100% thought we were trying to steal. However, this time we went to the shopping center by my house. It's very local so no one really cares what happens there, plus there is a side in the parking where no one goes so we would be able to film without any interruptions. Soooo we went to to the side part and filmed the parking part first, it didn't take much because we actually focused on doing our parts. However, the driving off scene took a little longer since Omnia doesn't drive. We had to get her in the car but change the angle so that someone else could drive the car. The point was to give the illusion of her driving away. We think it worked but I'll make sure later in editing. After the parking scene we went into the stores and f...

Production Blog: We were so close to the finish line

Image
My group and I have fully went through all of our scenes and realized we are missing some important pieces. Mostly because the shots were not matching and the story wasn't adding up. So we have to redo the whole shopping scene again. Other than that all the other shot seemed good so we are beginning the editing and choosing which shots work best for it. Currently all 3 of us are taking a section of the film and editing it to speed up the process. It's not completely done because we just went through them a shared our thoughts. Actually choosing what goes into the film depends on the person editing. But as of right now what we accomplished by going through all of them together was figuring out what needs to be filmed again or if we need filler just in case. I know that we just filmed the shopping scene but we were so nervous that none of the scenes came out how we wanted them to be. Some ended too quick and if we finished the scene we were not focused at all so it did not look r...

Production Blog: Last day of filming

Image
Basically we are done with filming. I know, I know, such an accomplishment. We went through what we said we did. Today we did all the fillers needed, however I think we did too much. We went to a cafe near our school, since we filmed right after school. Well, technically we went to two. The first one we tried to ask for permission but they said no so we went to a different one which had separate areas and was a family owned business so asking for permission was easier. The scene we filmed was a lot longer than what we did on our storyboard because we didn't want to interrupt too much. Yes, we got permission and everything, and bought food since that is their whole business, but there were other people and we were embarrassed because we kept messing up. We filmed the same shot like 3 times!! And it wasn't a different form like yesterday, like we legit couldn't go past the first three words we were supposed to say. And mid way through the food came which made it very awkward...

Production Blog: 2nd Day Streakkk!

You won't believe it... WE FILMED AGAIN.  We did plan on doing it next Mondya but we were all free today so we just decided to film. This time we went to my house to film the ending of our film but we still have more to do. So so far we have filmed the beginning and end but we need to film the shots at the store and coffee shop for fillers in our film. It also ties everthing together because it's when the audience begins to realize that the main character hasn't been doing the thing we have seen. That everything is in her head. But we couldn't do that today since I had to be home soon. Sooo we decided today would be perfect to film the realization the the actor has been in a psych ward this whole time. We decided to use my room because my room is white and grey with a twin bed. The stuff that make my room look less like a psych ward room is easy to move away so that the setting matches our idea. But we did need to get creative with how we filmed this scene because I hav...

Production Blog: We Finally Started!!

Image
Once again we did not go with the plan...       Last blog I mentioned us filming on Saturday or Sunday but unfortunately that's not going to work. Saturday we are all busy, we all have plans so we left it for Sunday. However, on Sunday Harley worked 7-10:30, Omnia worked 4-9, and I worked 2-9. We knew before hand that we all worked but we thought that because Harley worked in the morning and us in the afternoon we would have have time between shifts to film at least the small scenes. BUT we did not think we would have about 3 hours. It would still be less though because Harley would pick up Omnia after work which would take ab 40 mins to get her and meet up. By the time we would meet up I would've had to leave in 30 minutes to make it on time to work. And we needed all three of us since two of us will be in the film and one of us would film. We also need one of our friends to join in some of the scenes. We will be doing that this week hopefully.      E...

Production Blog: A Little Obstacle

Image
Welcome backkkkk! It has been a while since our planning blog but my group has been very busy. As mentioned previously the last few blogs we were supposed to start filming a few weeks ago.... in our defense our schedules have not been aligning with each other. Starting a few weeks ago in all honesty we forgot, we had so much work from our other classes and after school activities that we never had time. However, last week we found out that today, February 19th, we had off from school which meant it would be perfect for us to film at least half of the movie. Since most of the scenes are in one of our houses. But everything went downhill since we decided. So today is Monday and yesterday it was POURING. The rain was so strong some of our houses got flooded. Especially our team member, Omnia, her place got completely flooded which prevented her to leave the house. Around that time she got sick and so did I. When the weather changes constantly it messes up with my noses causing me to ...

Production Blog: Trust the process

Image
Soooo it's been a while...  My group has been a little backed up due to so many things happening all at once. If you remember our planning blogs included our desired schedule on how this film was going to go. According to that plan we should be finishing the last edits today.... we haven't started filming. I know this a very unprofessional moment but we just have so much going on with our jobs, school, even personal lives. We all have important things happening. Even if we are just teenagers we still have our own worries. For example, me, a senior, has to worry about colleges and getting everything set before graduation, however, I still want to have fun and have the senior experience. My other two team members are juniors, one of the most stressful years of high school, they are worrying about their grades for college and SAT testing which is taking place next week. Basically we have been very occupied with our lives but we spoke today and came up with a new plan. We are pla...

Planning: Storyboard

Image
Heyyy! Welcome back! We finally finalized exactly how we want to do this so below each storyboard has it's own mini explanation... Enjoy!! These first 6 boxes is the main character waking up and going through her morning routine. When she leaves her house, she says bye to her mom. She hears her mom respond back, but when she gets outside she realizes that her mom isn't home The next 6 boxes is the main character hanging out with her friend at the mall. The main character watches as her friend starts stealing from a store.  The main character then calls out her friend on her actions. They walk out of the store into the parking lot and start arguing.  The main character gets home from the mall and empties her bag. She notices that there's a bunch of rando items in her bag that neither of them bought. She texts her friend about what she did.  The last scene is t friend picking up her phone.  The best friend answers the texts. The friend argue back and forth again....

The Game Plan

Image
Welcome back!!!!! So after having a long conversation with my group, we have come up with our overall plan to make this work.... So our story will basically show a girl having interaction but then be told none of that happened. The point is for her to seem like she is going insane but doesn't understand why. At the end, we show that the whole time she was in a psych ward, and none of what we showed in the movie happened.      The only issue is  we need to figure out how we are going to film all of these scenes. Our first idea was to find an abandoned place to film the last scene of the psych ward but it's not the safest. However, one of our members has a sister that does things like that so she would know what is the safest for us to do. If we do end up going to an abandoned place we will use gloves, masks, and hand sanitizer. If that doesn't work we might just to another one of our rooms to show us being held in a facility. Don't worry we will be safe!...

Short Film Research: Scruples/ mystery

Image
After looking into a few short films in which applied to our genre, I found that that that “Scruples” by Adrian Powers was a great fit. This film is based on two ‘cleaners’ for a criminal gang who have been sent to tie up a loose end. However, one of them is an undercover cop who finds himself in a tricky spot. A slightly insincere account of how policeman would actually have to act Is the approach that overall surrounds this film.        This short film has great similarities when it comes to appealing to an audience, including sounds. Commonly sound sounds in this genre include dramatic sounds that interpret exhaustion, or sudden surprise. As found in the short film, background noise is intriguing and allows the audience to feel a sense of suspense. The mystery genre often uses costumes that may make a character look overlooked, like in the short film where they were basic-colored coats. Lighting is often dimmed down during these genres, with cooler/ m...

Short film research: Wanderer/ mystery

Image
“Wanderer” By Mark O’Brien and Jake Wilkins is yet another short film that falls under the Mystery/ Thriller Genre. This short film includes many elements that apply to our chosen genre, Mystery. This short film is based on a male traveler who arrives at a secluded house around the evening time. As he is looking for shelter, he stumbles across a youngish couple that appears to be around his age group. They invite him to dinner which later leads to the uneasy feeling of the woman. Leading to the following questions, “Could it be that the nomadic serial killer who has been stalking the area has just walked into their house?” “Will they survive the night? “Wanderer” was produced in a way in which readers follow up with the following question “what is going to happen next” In this case, with the usage of sound/ noise. With quieter, less noisy sounds, this film allows for reader to maintain a less sudden approach. Background noise plays a very large role in the approach of the myster...

Short Film Research: Prosopagnosia (mystery)

Image
This was by far a favorite, this storyline explains a man who lost his best friend, Julia with curly red hair, in a murder, however, he saw the killer but could not recognize their face due to his medical condition p rosopagnosia- a condition that prevents a person from recognizing anyone's face. In the beginning, the man is being interrogated by an investigator, the investigator seems to get more aggressive with the man because he believes he is to blame for Julia’s murder. However, he explains he loves Julia very much and that he saw the clear but simply couldn't recognize him. The only thing he can say is he had a Yankee's shirt and was the same description as him. The investigator eventually gets evidence to believe him; they both end up driving to the crime scene to prove something which somehow causes follow-up questions including any past with Julia. The man dated Julia but he ended it due to him only seeing her in a platonic way, eventually, he got with another ...

Short film research: Jet by Jordan Chesney (thriller mystery)

Image
For one of our films of research we did a thriller mystery called 'Jet.' Overall the film starts off with a man in a car about to shoot himself in the head,  but before he does anything he sees a little girl which stops him. He sits in silence allowing him to see the girl get abducted by a man in a van, he then follows the van to end up at the house she has been taken to. The man then walks up to the house with the gun he planned on using on himself. Two other men come out which results in them being shot. Then the man walks into the house to save the girl just to find her sitting unharmed. Though what happened isn't clear one could assume that she was safe and those people he shot were her family of some sort.      However, to get a sense of feeling instead of just a storyline, angles, costumes, props, and editing were key factors. The directors of this film used many wide shots, hidden angles like in a bush, point-of-view shots, close-up s...

How to make a short film

Image
Writing to what you have resources to is a strong saying that we’ll have to live by when developing our plot and script. We can only write with what we have.  There’s only so much we can do with the camera that we’re filming with and the lack of mics. Knowing that we’ll need time to edit and fix the pacing of the film. We only have five minutes, so we need to be careful on how much we film and the amount we’ll cut. Over-filming is the best option, but we need to make sure the plot isn't one that doesn't have to be fully fleshed out to be able to understand. There does need to be payoffs of some sort and every scene has to provide something for the ending, there’s no room for filler. There also can’t be a lot of predictability within the film, which will be hard because of the groundhog-type day plot we might use. There has to be types of scenes that the audience won’t see coming, while also following the theme of the story. The theme will drive our plot, and it needs to be u...

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Part 1:      The film 12 Monkeys is a homage to LeJetee. They can’t be compared, because they aren’t the same thing. The short film is considered a photo novel, while 12 Monkeys is an actual film. 12 Monkeys uses dialogue and scenes where people are actually acting. The actors in LeJetee are also acting but not in the same way, they’re acting in pictures. Each photo has to be taken at the perfect moment to get the right shot. The story is left for the audience to play out in their head.LeJetee’s sound comes from the narrator doing a voice-over, which tells the story of the photos. The photos are in black and white, while the film is in color.  When creating a short film the same scenes can be used, it's how they’re used that matters. The context behind the scenes will change as the plot is driven. Using a different editing style when using the same scenes conveys a change in the meaning of scenes. The music will also change the feel of a scene. We plan on usin...
