Genre research: The final decision..

After looking over the different genres we came down to three contenders- mystery, thriller, and romance. And to do a quick recap our pitch is "A girl struggles to realize the blurred lines between fiction and reality." So now that you are all caught up we were thinking that everyone was going to do the same which is horror, so we fell on the idea of a romance film. And I know you may be thinking about how could that work with our pitch. BUT, we thought it could be a story of a girl being delusional and going crazy over a lover. We later realized it is a lot closer to thriller or mystery than romance. Since there isn't a happy ending. And just in case you forgot the actual story of our film is still in the works but we know we want to surround it with a person going insane, to spread the danger of not caring for a mental health issue. So going through the genres and ideas let us come to our final decision- but before I tell you let me walk you through the thought process. Once we finished our research for thriller and mystery, our knowledge of which one we wanted to take got a bit more complicated. Although they seem similar they are not the same thing. They both use the same techniques to perceive a certain feeling. However, the feeling a thriller film tries to exhibit is not knowing what's next while a mystery film is confusion and intrigue. So if you haven't guessed it by now we are sticking with... drum roll, please.... mystery!!! The reason being our pitch revolves around the main character fighting with reality, but before the audience finds out we want them to believe everything the main character believes to create a 'what just happened' effect at the end of our film. This idea falls under both but we want to take a mystery route with what the character is fighting because it would be easier to keep the audience intrigued due to them trying to solve the mystery as well. It was hard to come to this decision but we are very excited to show our creative side in this film.
