Research: Commercial Conventions and Codes

My partner and I will be doing a Coca-Cola commercial. Usually in these commercials the audience is given a story something emotional.

  • They usually don't have a specific costume they all wear casual clothing, comfortable clothing.

  • The props are always changed, but they are all to make it seem like a real life scenario, with

the background having cars or stuff inside a house.

  • The sets are really important in each of the commercials, they must match the story.

A commercial about a family would be based at home or a park, each story has a specific set that gives

more feeling.

  • There is always acting in the commercials, to prove a story to people or make the audience

feel good about the “happy ending.”

Conventions and code:

1. At the end of each commercial the Coca-Cola logo is shown, it’s either a red circle with the wording of Coca-Cola in it, or a picture of a Coke bottle. But always with the word Coca-Cola in a cursive font.

2. After each story a clever quote about the story is shown with the logo. For example “share a coke with,”

“taste the feeling,” “together tastes better,” or “enjoy meals at home with Coca-Cola.”

3. The brand is completely around pathos, it always tries to give a type of story to show how Coca-Cola

makes you feel better, or bring people together.

4. Anytime they show the actual product it can be in a cup, the bottle, or can. But what they have in

common is the drink always looks cold. It usually has water dripping down the cup or bottle. If it is in a cup

there is always cubed ice, as once again water drips down the cup.

5. Sometimes at the end they show someone drinking the Coca-Cola and automatically feeling refreshed.

6. Some of them also have a lot of diversity, the brand is surrounded the whole family and friends idea. This is to be able to "touch peoples hearts." Or to show that everything is better together.
